Host: I would like to hear what product you have developed after 30 years of research on hair?
Zhu Jianxia: Actually, besides shampoo, Sibiman's main product is called scalp care product. I am 65 years old this year. Look at me, I haven't dyed my hair. Nowadays, many people in their forties or fifties have white hair, baldness, and hair loss. In fact, everyone really doesn't have good hair care products to take care of our scalp.
Host: What is your major?
Zhu Jianxia: I was admitted to Nanjing University in 1978, majoring in polymer chemistry. When I was young, I was very interested in traditional Chinese medicine.
Host: When did you start researching hair loss?
Zhu Jianxia: Actually, when I was admitted to Nanjing University in 1978, I had been paying attention to research in this area.
Host: After graduating from college, you definitely didn't start your own business, you went to some organization.
Zhu Jianxia: No, after graduating from university, I worked in Nanjing for a few years, six years, and then moved to Shenzhen. Later, I worked at Shenzhen University for another 23 years. Throughout the process, my husband and I were classmates at Nanjing University. He won many national natural science foundation projects, and the two of us worked together in this field, doing scientific research.
Host: When did you truly start your own business and create a product that is effective for hair?
Zhu Jianxia: I retired from Shenzhen University in 2014, and I still receive my retirement salary from Shenzhen University. Actually, when I was at Shenzhen University, I was also engaged in scientific research and trying out some entrepreneurial endeavors. Because when I was young, I had two dreams. The first was to write a book, and the second was to start a business. Later, when I was 53 years old, I wrote a book called 'Stanford Boys and Happy Moms'. Because I wanted to start a business when I was a child, what should I use to start a business? What is the world's challenge, and what can truly reflect my value, so I have been thinking about this question. So I have been deeply involved in the field of scalp maintenance.
Host: In which year was the product introduced?
Zhu Jianxia: The product was 15 years ago.
Host: If you want to make this product yourself, you need to invest and have a production line. Isn't this money quite substantial?
Zhu Jianxia: When we were at Shenzhen University, research funding was very abundant at that time. Because my husband also had his own laboratory, most of our scientific research at that time was conducted at Shenzhen University. Later on, we went to work in a factory and gradually accumulated our own funds from childhood to adulthood. Until now, including the office located at No.1 Nanshan Qiaocheng in Shenzhen, our headquarters has been fully purchased by us. We also have our own factory in Lianyungang, Jiangsu. Shibiman has a complete industry chain including research, factory, and sales.
Host: You should know that shampoo, as a personal care product, is highly competitive. How could consumers notice you?
Zhu Jianxia: After our product was launched, we tried various channels such as e-commerce, and then connected with hair salons, pharmacies, and so on. But they all ended in failure. So when I gave a speech at Harvard University, I said that believing in incredible things is the key to innovation. In the future, scalp care will become a way of life for people. Later, we took a solution and opened our first experience store in a very high-end shopping center called Junshang Department Store in Shenzhen. Let customers come to our store to experience. After opening this store, we have also opened 10 direct stores in Shenzhen. Many people fly from all over the country to Shenzhen to use our products. We have approximately 1 million customers and currently have around 2000 stores and counters worldwide. There are also over 120 stores in Beijing, such as Century Jinyuan and others, all of which have our stores.
Host: How long did it take to develop it at the beginning? Develop this product?
Zhu Jianxia: It has been about 30 years since then. Of course, I haven't been staying in the laboratory all the time, researching and thinking at the same time. When I was doing scientific research, I thought to myself that I believed in having this belief first. When I first did it, I mainly considered several dimensions. As people all over the world age, regardless of whether they were born with yellow hair, black hair, red hair, or green hair, they will all turn white as they age. So white hair is not a matter of whether it looks good or not, it is a symbol of aging. When I first started researching, I said that if it was really possible, then this thing must be anti-aging. The second reason is that hair is growing every day, so it's best for you to use it continuously, just like how we need to eat every day and constantly supplement it with nutrients.
Host: Are researchers who come out of university good at doing business?
Zhu Jianxia: I'm quite impressive. I often teach entrepreneurs in Shenzhen how to build a chain brand and a business. I should say that I have emotions, like the surplus portion of our company. I don't buy luxury cars or famous brands, I don't have any. I use all my money for scientific research. We have a joint laboratory with State Key Laboratory Nanjing University.
Host: Research what?
Zhu Jianxia: Research is about the mechanism of how Shibiman can turn from white to black?
Host: Since you have already made the product, why do you need to further study its mechanism?
Zhu Jianxia: We need to further improve this product and update and iterate it to do better, because I originally predicted that it could resist aging, but how do you resist aging and what is its mechanism? Which cell of ours does it act on? Why can it turn white to black? Why can it prevent hair? When we started doing it, we hadn't done any research yet, we just made a product.
Host: So what is your ultimate goal? Is it to make this product sell better, or to take another step forward in scientific research?
Zhu Jianxia: We must take another step forward in scientific research.
Host: Why?
Zhu Jianxia: Actually, there are many good products. When they don't know their mechanism, it's difficult to further improve their quality and quality. You only have to understand its mechanism completely, but my poem Biman is not. I use molecular sieve, which is a small sieve that you can't see with the naked eye, to extract the anti-aging of Chinese herbal medicine, remove the bad design, and call its essence to remove the dross. Sibiman has solved three major problems of Chinese herbal medicine. The first one is standardization. For example, your Chinese herbal medicine, an old Chinese medicine doctor has issued a prescription of 10 grams of ginseng and 10 grams of angelica, but your origin is different. For example, your ginseng in one year is different from that in ten years, while my Sibiman can achieve 1 million bottles and 10 million bottles have the same effect. So in the future, more people in the fields of Chinese herbal medicine, such as chemists and life sciences, will enter this field, which will be very good. After studying Chinese herbal medicine for so many years, I have found that it is really wonderful.
Let me give another example. There is a plant called Peach Leaf Sanfu Gan, which is the main anti-aging ingredient in plants like Plantago asiatica and Eucommia ulmoides. It is also very beneficial for treating cancer. But if it exceeds 25 degrees, it will decompose. And if we traditional Chinese medicine use it to boil, many anti-aging ingredients will be destroyed. But when we study chemistry, it considers each molecule and what exactly is at work. So it's like this.
Host: You are engaged in scientific research and hope to make this product very good. What is your big goal in mind?
Zhu Jianxia: My main task now is to recruit talents and attract more people. I am currently working on some major funding projects to build a team with these people, and then I will do my best to return to the laboratory. Actually, my true hobby is staying in the laboratory.
